Kick Pompey When They Are Down Why Don't Ya?

Outrageous! The FA, Premier League and the Society For Protecting The Interests Of The Bigger Clubs have clubbed together, as usual, and ruled that Pompey will not be allowed to play in Europe next season. Apparently they didn't fill out the required form!

What utter cobblers! They are bankrupt and relegated but, despite this, have fought their way through to an F.A. Cup Final! Isn't qualification for Europe supposed to be settled on the field of play? Why does a club need to fill in a form to apply for a place for God's sake, shouldn't progression through to the Final of the most prestigious domestic cup competition of them all be more important?

My first thought, when Pompey triumphed over Tottenham, was that their great fans would be rewarded with a European adventure to compensate for all the misery of this season. But no, the pedants and vested interest protectors don't give a monkey's toss about common justice or the romance of the cup. Some have suggested that the winners of the FA Cup should qualify for the Champions League; if Pompey win it, they won't even get in to the Europa Piss Pot League. What a disgrace!

A very sad narrow minded response and one that displays ignorance of the facts too. It has a lot to do with West Ham. It may mean Liverpool don't need to win at Hull on the last day of the season to qualify for Europe next season. Remember when they fielded a weakened team at Fulham and lost? It ccould happen again this year.

I can see both sides to this argument - they have reached the cup final and deserve to be there on merit.
Similarly they're bankrupt - they havent paid the money owing for half their team and have been mismanaged to the point of extinction - one could argue they get what they deserve (albeit half of the culprits have since moved on) - part of me remembers the squad full of overpriced wrong uns redknapp assembled (titi camara, rigobert song etc) and spunked our money - we managed to drag the coffers back around for a while after he left (or maybe we covered it up and are only clearing house now - lets hope he's left unchecked to ruin spurs too

Pompey totally deserve to play in the Europa League. I am sure that if a big club was in its place and did not fill in a form on time the decision would be totally different. It is unsporting and unfair that the team that reaches the final (and indeed may win the Cup) would not represent its country because of a mere formality. This is utter rubbish. The hypocricy of some managers (e.g. Moyes) that may stand to benefit from this is audacious.

i feel sorry for portsmouth. not the club but the fans. this could happen to us if we go down. but thankfully i dont think we will now. fingers and toes crossed.

I think this European place issue should be taken in isolation. If a place in Europe is reserved for a team through the cup then it should go to that team, form or no form, administration or no administration. They are now going to give to some team that hasn't earnt it and probably doesn't need it as much as Pompey.

Chris has made some good points but the powers that be should look at it this way; any money that Pompey get from their European games can help pay some of the money the club owes.

they have to clear the way for liverpool to qualify for the champions league somehow

Agree.

It's a pretty unsporting behaviour. They've beaten Tottscum and reached the final so they deserved it!

nah fuck em

Well said Stani. I think we are in total agreement (maybe for the first time!) about this issue. How can anyone justify depriving the hard earned right of a beleaguered football club to rip the rewards of its efforts and give it to another club simply because a form was not filled on time? It is really beyond me. The people in charge of football seem to have lost their moral values (if they ever had any).

Sav,
O stop it! You agree with me all the time, privately. Maybe you've had enough of playing devil's advocate this time ;)

Whilst you're in the mood, how much better is that Danny Gabbidon than Upson? :)

Sav said...

Stani,

I can't give you any arguments based on the performance of Upson in the last few games. But you are right we don't disagree too much. The worrying thing for me is that I am probably the only one who seems to be in almost complete agreement with the views and positions of HF? I hope there is no truth in the say that "all the world can't be wrong". Perhaps I should have my head examined! I hope we can beat Wigan tomorrow and relax a little bit! All the best!

Sav,
We can all be wrong mate, even when we're in the majority. Proof? George Bush elected president! Although there's some doubt in the majority aspect there. That's why when you and HF are ready to admit you were wrong, I'll understand :) (just teasing!). I'm surprised you haven't been accused of being HF himself Sav, because I have been. It's died down since Sherlock et al have noticed me and HF disagreeing. Although I could be HF just disagreeing with myself. I do that a lot you know...no I don't, yes I do...no I don't hahaha! Terrible

Thing is that we could apply that argument to every club in debt mate, even Man Utd, the biggest of them all. I agree with your underlying point that it's not fair but it is rife. Clubs in debt that buy players are not buying them with their own money.

Sav said...

Stani, I know you are not HF in disguise because you have been very consistently positive about Gabbidon. I don't think HF is capable for such prolonged and enduring positivity about anyone related to West Ham. Just joking!

"pompey they cheated and shouldnt even have half the players they have got at the moment as they couldnt really afford them"
This is a wind up, right?

Otherwise something about 'throwing stones' and 'glass houses' comes to mind.

I take it that you're aware of our rather inglorious history of the the past 3 seasons or have you just returned from outside the solar system ?

Hammersfan said...

Thought much the same myself! The debts are similar aren't they?

The more I think about, the more convinced I am that I've been had over.

It's a wind-up and I fell for it.
Shame on me.
