Pardew comes over all humble at Newcastle

It was very interesting to hear Pardew's interview on Radio 5. He knows the Toon Army don't want him and was being very, very careful not to come across as an arrogant Southern tosser. He was quick to point out that, although not a Geordie, he was "English" and then, being more sensitive still, reclassified himself as from the "British Isles", so he wants the Lindisfarne natives behind him too!

There was no triumphalism, no cockiness, he was almost apologising for having been given the job, giving Hughton great credit for what he had done and acknowledging that his predecessor had been "unlucky". I think he even dared to use the word "unfair"!

There was talk of bringing in a coaching team to help the players improve, recognition of the player's loyalty to Hughton and an insistence that he was not a "Yes man". He was obviously courting the Toon foot soldiers (on the Chairman's authority) when he promised to stand up to Ashley and argue with him if necessary.

All in all, it was a clever PR job, which is what we would expect from Mr Armani. Had he been appointed by the Davids the tone would have been so much more upbeat, so much more Gung Ho! "The unfinished business starts today" would have been the theme.

The amazing thing is the length of the contract. Do these club owners never learn? I bet Pardew would have joined on a one year rolling deal if that was all that was on offer! I trust Ashley has built in a "Dick out" clause!

I know you rate PARDEW, HF,but I think he will be proven out of his depth in this job.The NEWCASTLE fans are already up in arms over his appointment, they were expecting someone big,who do they get, a manager with a C.V that is hardly glowing. When he lost the dressing room at WESTHAM ,partly because of his off field antics and partly because of not being able to handle the big time charlies at the club,he was unable to improve things .In fact,it all went downhill very quickly, not least team performances and results.NEWCASTLE are a bigger club than WESTHAM,with a very passionate fan base that demands success,he is going to have to work miracles to satisfy them, and time is certainly not on his side. Not forgetting also, the dressing room showdowns that will surely occur, with players like NOLAN,and CAROLL, I just don't think he has achieved enough in the game to get the respect of the players.Unless he gets off to a flyer he is going to have one hell of a bumpy ride,And like you say as far as giving him a 5 1/2 year contract, absolute madness, thats another big early contract payment in the offing NEWCASTLE will be having to fork out for.

I think you may be right, but I suspect you meant Barton rather than Nolan. God help Pardew if he gets inside Barton's WAG's knickers! That could be fun!!!!

I don't rate Pardew at all HF. I just find it difficult to appreciate someone who thought it was good management not playing Tevez and Mascherano for so long! Moreover, what he says and he does are two different things.

He said he wants to develop Newcastle in the Arsenal model! Come on! If he could that then why did he not do it with West Ham who had probably the best Academy in England! Good luck to him, but I feel quite relieved he is not coming back to Upton Park.

OMG - check this out, HF - the old Southampton Chairman (admittedly EAL, the fella) actually comes out with these exact words in response to the question 'why did you sack him?'
Y'all ready for this.......................................................................................................................
"There were plenty of reasons why ultimately he ended up .... into the sack"

Wanna check it for yoourself?
