Was Last Night's Hammering A Tipping Point?

I make no secret of having been opposed to the appointment of Curbishley from the off and, despite our slide down the table since he flounced out of the club, I still hold with the view that he was the wrong man for the job. Why are where we are now? In large part because of the ludicrous purchases of Curbishley: Ljungberg, Dyer, Boa, Davenport, Quashie and Faubert. £26m in transfer fees alone for that bunch, never mind the salaries. It took another £4m to buy out Ljungberg's contract and Dyer's wages alone have cost us the best part of £30m. And for what? Add in Bellamy, Neill, Upson and Parker and you explain just about the whole of the debt!

After last night's game, a few more might appreciate the qualities Pardew brings to the table. Newcastle played like we played under Pards - vibrant, pacey, attacking football. And we played like a team under Zola, Roeder and, I'm sad to admit, Grant - clueless, gutless and hopeless.

You have to wonder if last night was a tipping point. I was a huge fan of Pardew but, after that pathetic hammering at Bolton - 4-0 - I was forced to concede that perhaps he had to go. Thus far I have backed Grant but last night was just too poor to be true. We made Newcastle look like Barcelona. We made Leon Best look like George Best. We made Gutierrez look like Messi.

Defensively we were woeful. Piquionne was disgraceful for the first goal, giving away the ball and making no attempt whatsoever to get it back again. Quite why the defence was so stretched from that point is beyond me however. The goal was so easy to score, especially when Green dithered rather than rushing Best to close the inevitable shot.

Goal two was humiliating. The marking from the freekick was crass and the failure of Gabbidon to clear was oh so typical. Goal three was as bad. The first defensive headed "clearance" was poor and the follow up Tomkins pass to Nolan was embarrassing.

Goal four looked offside to me but, regardless, there was a gaping hole through the centre of our defence and Gabbidon was hopelessly out of position. And God knows where the midfield cover was supposed to be.

Goal five said it all. Gabbidon was hopeless again and Upson made no attempt to intercept the cross. Then there was the Ranger miss. There were three, count them, THREE unmarked Newcastle players in our penalty box. How? How is that possible?

Somebody has to be held accountable for that performance. Grant claimed it was just a "bad day at the office" and that, in itself, is unacceptable. I wanted to hear that the performance was a disgrace, embarrassing, utterly unacceptable, humiliating, shameful and unforgivable. Upson said it was "one step too far" as if  too much had been expected and demanded of our poor put upon players. Cobblers. These lazy bastards don't give a damn.

Will this game prove to be Grant's tipping point? I wouldn't be surprised. The trouble is, Pardew was the man to replace him and Newcastle won't sack him for at least another six months. Hughton would be a disastrous appointment so perhaps Woy would be the best bet - after Liverpool show him the door.

I have always said that the wastage of transfer funds during GUDMUNDSON'S reign was our undoing. Those funds were used like a kid in a candy store, buying absolute crap in the main.To me thats when it all started going downhill,CURBISHLEY'S buys, have to a large extent, led us to the position we are in today.
As for appointing HODGSON ,if he can't do it at LIVERPOOL with their players, then he surely won't be any use to us with our shower.True,he done okay at FULHAM, but thats a one off in all the management jobs he has had,he has done nothing. If I remember rightly last nights performance was a repeat of some of the performances under PARDEW before his sacking...READING 6-0,BOLTON 4-0 ring a bell? These are symptoms of a team that is punch-drunk,to put it in boxing terms. As soon as that first goal went in the players went into a kind of "not try mode".It's as though they could see what was coming, because these same players have experienced beatings so often .GRANT was correct when he took over the club they are psycologically damaged.I think the major fault lies with the players not GRANT,he was shell-shocked as we all were. Its the players that need replacing not the manager.

Your memory is playing tricks Essex. 6-0 at Reading was under Turds!

ROY HODGSON!!!! You ARE joking?!?!?!?!?!?

Well I can remember that we went on an awful run of defeats under PARDEW.You will have to remind me HF,some of those scores and how badly we were playing. We have had so many pastings over the years its become all a haze,I'm as punch drunk as our players.

Newcastle fan here why would hughton be a disastrous appointment?

That's twice you've said Barton scored their 3rd goal,It was NOLAN!

Hammersfan said...

Quite right 21.31. I've corrected. Thanks. Can't explain the mental block.

Essex, we did have a poor run, but nowhere near as poor as the run that followed under Turds. The 4-0 hammering at Bolton and the League Cup exit were the two VERY bad performances. Turds could count 0-6 to Reading, 0-4 to Charlton, 0-3 to Sheffield United, 0-1 to Watford (twice!), 0-4 to Spurs, 0-4 to Chelsea and 0-4 to Liverpool amongst his horror moments!

Hammersfan
so rebuilding a broken nufc reinstilling a team spirit in the nufc players counts for nothing?
when nolan arrived at nufc to call him shite would be an understatement but now hes back to his best and a key component of the side. He rehabilitated barton whos now looking one of the best players in the prem, under hughton carroll came from lanky kid to one of the brightest striking prospects in the country, he spotted cheick tiote who has been the buy of the season if you ask me and any other nufc fan, what hughton did cannot be underestimated and while it may be too late to save you this season I have no doubt he'd be able to rebuild west ham in the championship to a respectable club once again, provided your porn merchant owners don't interfere too much.
Good luck for the rest of the season and good blog

Piquionne was lazy all game. Ever since his Houllier and Villa comments, I've lost respect for the guy. Missed an easy chance too. We need to give Hines his place. He caused more trouble in a few minutes than that guy all game.

First goal; Noble running back couldnt keep up with the spring chicken Lovenkrands, who swapped passes with Best and Tomkins was left on his own, helpless. Green was also indecisive, neither forward or back and just made it easy for Best.

As for the gaping hole in goal four mate; I'm sorry to say but it wasnt Upson's or Gabbidon's fault HF, it was Ben Haim. Have a look where he is. The guy is half way up the right flank. That meant Tomkins had to shift across to cover right back and Upson was left trying to mark two and Gabbidon was also left in two minds trying to cover down the right and centre. We were stretched because of that moron. Cant believe you want us to sign him HF. Guy's a liability. He has no positioning or discipline as a defender, is slow and makes cumbersome lunging tackles. One angle on MOTD in the replay for that goal will show the above positions clearly. Have a look.

You really do see everything through personal prejudice don't you Stani? "Ever since"? You were opposed to signing Piquionne from the off! As for blaming Noble and Ben Haim, how predictable was that?

Of course Ben Haim was "out of position" for the first, we were attacking down the right and, as a full back, he has the responsibility to assist attacks down his own flank. When that happens, the full back on the opposite flank forms a defensive unit with the two centre backs, with the holding midfielder also providing cover. Where was Kovac? I have no idea? Why didn't we have a unit of Upson, Tomkins and Gabbidon to deal with the TWO Newcastle front men? I have no idea.

Why are you blaming Noble? It was Kovac's job to provide the primary defensive cover.

And why the focus on that first goal? What about Gabbidon's fluffed clearance for the second? Tomkins' flffed clearance for the third, Gabbidon's positioning for the fourth and fifth, the huge hole between the two centre backs for the fourth and the inept attempt by Upson to deal with the cross for the fifth. I didn't rate the players after the game but I will now:

Green 4 (partially to blame for the first and two shocking clearances - no saves of note); Ben Haim 5 (He got stuck in and at least looked as if he was pissed off by what was happening), Tomkins 1 (He was AWFUL) Upson 1 (He is supposed to LEAD and manage the defence on the pitch) Gabbidon 0 (He was truly, truly awful); Sears 3 (He ran around a lot)Parker 5 (He ran around a lot, turned in circles a lot, had a shot, played ONE telling pass and lost possession a lot) Kovac 0 (Did he find a West Ham man with a pass? Did he complete a tackle? Did he track a runner all night?)Noble 1 (Looked tired. The game bypassed him.) Piquionne 0 (Truly, truly awful. He looked disinterested.) Cole 2 (He had a couple of shots but was crap) Subs: Behrami 0 (What did he do?) Hines 6 (Scored a good goal in my book), Obinna 2 (Dreadful corner, dreadful free kick, dreadful shot.)

HF,
Yes, I am still opposed to Piquionne's signing! And? Well Noble should have covered for that goal. You yourself have argued that he sometimes doesnt take set pieces because he covers. Lee Dixon asked on the analysis 'where was the cover?'. If you look in the background, it is there in the shape of Mark Noble trying t keep up with Lovenkrands! As the ball goes in the net, Noble arrives, too little too late, like the police in the America action movies. Kovac's job or not, Noble was there with Lovenkrands and he lost him.

As for Ben Haim, I wasnt talking about the first goal! I think it was Best's 3rd one....second half, go have a look. There was no attack on! Ben Haim was way up the right flank.

And I focussed on the first goal because I was bringing it to your attention as you blamed Piquionne and Green but missed out the middle bit i.e Noble. Hence, that is why I focussed on the first goal. If you had missed something on another goal, I would have focussed on that. Stop assuming things. Watch the 1st goal again and watch Noble.

After some good games, Tomkins had a shocker. He was possibly our worst player..or maybe Piquionnes disinterested laziness nicks that accolade. Ben Haim looked pissed off? Did you see Gabbidon looking pissed off. If Ben Haim looking pissed off is him caring, then same applies to Gabbidon. As for his clearance, it came off Green so it hit him more than him kicking it out. Your blaming him too much for that, hence the 0.

Ladies, Ladies, Ladies this constant juvenile bickering is starting to get a tad boring... can't it be taken elsewhere and sorted out? I'm sure I'm not the only one that finds it all rather embarrassing.
